Cara Romero is 56, recently unemployed, and reporting to a government job program in 1980s New York. The whole novel is just her talking — to her caseworker, across a desk, week after week. It’s funny and sad and textured. Now that I think about it, it’d be a great follow-up read to The Correspondent.
Trespasses
Louise Kennedy
Northern Ireland during the Troubles, a young teacher and an older married man. Kennedy writes tension you can feel in your chest. Excellent.
